The MacDonald clan was founded when Kind Somerled was killed fighting Malcolm IV in 1164, was succeeded by his son Dougall and the clan of MacDonald through Dougall’s son Ronald and his grandson Donald. One of the largest clans, the family have many branches and are mentioned throughout historic Scotland. The MacDonald’s ruled the seas around scotland for almost 400 years.
